Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes, has warmly welcomed the recent announcement that the Australia Council for the Arts will host the 5th International World Summit on Arts and Culture in Melbourne in October 2011.
“The theme of this Summit is creative intersection, which points to a wider significance in the choice of Australia as host,” said Commissioner Innes. “This reflects the global interest in the way the arts can give voice to different communities and community concerns everywhere in the world, with artistic collaborations and activities being used to promote understanding in areas as diverse as health, the environment, sustainability and education.”
“Human expression, including expression of one’s cultural identity, is a human right, as is the freedom of religion and belief,” said Commissioner Innes. “It is through human rights that respectful, creative, healthy and socially inclusive societies are built.”
“In a globalised world, the arts and the freedom to participate in cultural life and to enjoy the arts are fundamental to achieving these rights,” Mr Innes said.
In extending his congratulations, Commissioner Innes said that the Australian Human Rights Commission was proud to be working in collaboration with the Australia Council on a number of human rights-based approaches to community cultural development.
“It is wonderful that Australia has been recognised as a prime arts destination,” said Commissioner Innes. “All Australians should be proud of both our artists and our arts industries and recognise the enormous diversity that makes Australia such a culturally and artistically vibrant nation.”
Commissioner Innes said the Australian Human Rights Commission looked forward to working with the Australia Council, its various partners and the government to help promote the arts and culture as a key arm of human rights education in the years ahead.
