Toronto’s St. Vladimir Receives $20,000 Grant From Paul Yuzyk Award Recipient

Has chosen to donate the award’s $20,000 grant to the St. Vladimir Institute in Toronto, Manitoba’s Selkirk-Interlake MP James Bezan announced today on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. Mr. Yaremko was presented with the award in the Lifetime Achievement category this past June.

The Paul Yuzyk Award commemorates the late Senator Yuzyk’s pioneering legacy establishing multiculturalism as one of the fundamental characteristics of Canadian identity. In accordance with the award criteria, Mr. Yaremko was asked to choose an eligible, registered not-for-profit Canadian organization or association to receive the grant.

“The St. Vladimir Institute is a long-standing organization that is dedicated to the promotion of Ukrainian culture in Toronto,” said MP Bezan. “Its activities are reflective of Mr. Yaremko’s lifelong commitment to being a strong advocate for education, human rights and multiculturalism and of the spirit of the Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism.”

The St. Vladimir Institute is a Ukrainian student residence and cultural community centre located in the heart of downtown Toronto. It is committed to the fostering of knowledge and appreciation of the Ukrainian spiritual, cultural and intellectual heritage.

Individuals from communities across Canada can be nominated in one of two categories for the Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism – Lifetime Achievement or Outstanding Achievement. The Lifetime Achievement category honours an individual who has demonstrated life-long dedication to the pursuit of promoting a strong multicultural society in Canada, while the Outstanding Achievement recognizes an individual or group who has made a significant contribution to Canadian multiculturalism within the last five years.

Nominations for the 2010 Paul Yuzyk Award for Multiculturalism are currently being accepted until March 1, 2010.
