Members of the ALERT Green Team South diffused a dangerous situation at a Calgary residence in the early hours of Nov. 10 while responding to a Crimestoppers tip into a potential marijuana grow operation.
When investigators arrived at the Somerset home, they were struck by an overwhelming smell of propane.
The Calgary Fire Department was immediately notified and attended the scene.
Upon entering the residence, it was discovered that a propane line connected to a carbon dioxide generator had broken, causing propane to fill the residence.
The propane lines were shut off and the residence was rendered safe to enter. At this time, a marijuana grow operation was found inside the residence.
“ALERT’s integrated law enforcement teams continue to make a real difference in Alberta communities,” said Fred Lindsay, Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security.
“A large grow-op is now out of business, and a serious threat to public safety has been eliminated making for a safer and more secure community.”
The Green Team South obtained and executed a search warrant, locating a three stage marijuana grow operation consisting of 1,616 plants, with an estimated street value of over $2 million.
Calgary Regional Health attended the residence and deemed it unfit for human habitation.
No one was found in the residence and no arrests have been made at this time.
“People often think of the social issues connected to growing marijuana but they don’t usually understand the real risk to public safety that these operations pose,” said Inspector Kevin Forsen, officer in charge of the Green Team South.
“Grow operations can pose a significant danger to the community due to the combination of power supplies and heat sources involved in growing the plants.
There was potential for a real tragedy to occur in that neighborhood last night had this situation not been diffused.”
The Green Team South is an integrated police team made up of investigators from the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP who specialize in marijuana grow operation investigations.
It is part of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), an umbrella organization established by the Government of Alberta to bring together Alberta’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources to strategically tackle serious and organized crime.
