The Minister for Employment Participation, Senator Mark Abib, today officially launched the new Yarrabah Construction Industry Upskilling and Employment Project.

The Australian Government has provided $450,000 to Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council to continue their program of upskilling 60 construction workers by providing structured support and pathways for sustainable employment in the building industry.

The project will provide much needed training and employment opportunities in the building and construction industries in Yarrabah and potentially throughout the region to address the high levels of unemployment in the Yarrabah Aboriginal Community.

Four key groups within the community will benefit from the project:

  • qualified tradespeople who need updated skills
  • trades assistants and semi-skilled workers
  • new building workers who will receive TAFE accredited training
  • civil construction workers requiring current machine operator tickets.

The project has been developed by Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council, the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and the Queensland Government.

The 60 construction workers will be upskilled to coincide with the building of up to 32 new houses in the community.

“The project is an example of the Rudd Government’s economic stimulus package at work. These are jobs for Australians building essential infrastructure for the future, while working to close the gap of Indigenous disadvantage,” Mr Arbib said.

“The project will create significant sustainable employment outcomes for members of the Yarrabah community, as well as providing much needed housing for Yarrabah.”

The Government has committed $460,000 to the project from the Indigenous Employment Program which will see $764 million spent over the next five years to strengthen Indigenous employment and business opportunities.
