Perth Airport’s Master Plan Approved.

Perth Airport’s 2009 Master Plan sets out its immediate multi-billion dollar investment plans as well as its strategic direction for the next 20 years.

Perth Airport is a vital part of the Western Australian and national economy.

In response to Perth’s growing need for modern, well-planned aviation infrastructure, the Master Plan sets out a ten-year, $2.4 billion investment program which includes the phased relocation of all regular passenger services to the International Precinct.

In addition, the Commonwealth and State Governments are working together to identify how road and public transport links to and from the Airport can be improved. This $3.5 million study is due to be finalised next year.

Perth Airport’s contribution to the WA economy is expected to reach $5 billion by 2029, with the number of direct and indirect jobs supported set to double to 37,000.

In giving my approval, I have made clear my expectation that the operators are to take a number of steps to improve the way they engage with nearby communities and respond to their concerns, particularly in relation to aircraft noise.

In future, residents must be informed and consulted about all major changes to the Airport’s operations and significant construction projects. This communication should involve direct mail, community leaflets, briefings to local councils, improved website information and provision of contact details for public enquiries.

As an immediate priority, I’ve requested the operators work closely with Airservices Australia to make sure Perth residents are fully aware of the temporary flight path changes that will be required when the main runway is resurfaced in early 2010.

This necessary runway maintenance will take about seven weeks to complete.

Perth Airport has 50 business days to make its latest 5-yearly Master Plan public.
