Victorian businesses have reported a lower regulatory burden and have greater confidence in their future prospects, Small Business Minister Joe Helper confirmed today.

Mr Helper said research commissioned by the Brumby Labor Government had found that businesses using the services of Business Victoria reported strong growth plans, with 63 per cent believing they will see profit increase in the coming year.

“The Brumby Labor Government understands the importance of providing Victorian businesses with the tools they need to thrive in the face of tough global economic conditions,” Mr Helper said.

“So it is pleasing to see so many of the Victorian businesses surveyed have high expectations of increased sales and turnover, profitability, capital investment and employment growth.

“The Brumby Labor Government is meeting the needs of small business. It’s no secret, smart businesses are using Business Victoria to get ahead.”

The Business Victoria website (www.business.vic.gov.au) brings together information and services, such as online transactions from across Government, to help reduce the time and monetary burden of compliance.

On top of increasing satisfaction with the support being provided by the Government, Mr Helper said the survey also found that businesses using the services of Business Victoria were spending 64 hours per year less on compliance.

“Businesses also said they spent $3,800 less each year to comply with government regulations than those not using these services,” he said.

Mr Helper said as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s small business statement, Time to Thrive, $18 million was being invested in Business Victoria to ensure that small business has access to the information and advice they need to prosper and thrive.

”Business Victoria is delivering a productivity benefit to Victorian businesses of $182 million, including contributing to Victoria’s ‘Reducing the Regulatory Burden’ targets,” he said.

“Victorians can have confidence that services such as Business Victoria are helping small business save time, money and foster greater economic growth.”
