The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, and Senator for New South Wales, Steve Hutchins today announced two New South Wales projects that will benefit from $2.9 million under the second and final round of the Local Schools Working Together pilot program.

The $62.5 million Local Schools Working Together pilot program is an important part of the Rudd Government’s Education Revolution.

The Local Schools Working Together pilot is helping government, Catholic and independent schools in every State and Territory work together with their local communities to develop important shared facilities.

These new shared facilities will open up great new opportunities to young people who might otherwise be denied access to the range of facilities and support enjoyed by students at other schools.

Round Two will provide $1.7 million to help Mt Carmel Catholic School and Berinba Public School to construct the Yass Community Education Sports Facility.

This initiative will provide shared facilities within each of the school’s grounds catering for sports including basketball, netball, tennis, athletics, hockey and soccer.

The second successful project for NSW provides $1.2 million for Mungindi Progress Association, St Josephs Primary School, Mungindi Central School and the Moree Plains Shire Council to build the Mungindi Community Multipurpose Complex.

The facility will cater for sports, functions, meetings, general learning, administration and cooking.

Partnerships may extend to third parties such as local councils or businesses where projects feature a broader community benefit.

Both projects provide facilities that have not previously been available to the partnering schools or their communities.

Twenty-six projects approved under the two funding rounds will benefit metropolitan, regional and rural communities across Australia.

The Local Schools Working Together pilot program is a new approach to addressing the needs of our schools and their local community that broadens the benefit of government expenditure on capital infrastructure.
