Bairnsdale women will have even better access to the highest quality maternity services close to home thanks to $125,000 in Brumby Labor Government funding.
Visiting Bairnsdale Health Service today, Health Minister Daniel Andrews announced $47,000 to implement the hospital’s review of maternity services.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to revitalize rural hospitals and improve access to maternity services for country Victorians,” Mr Andrews said.
“Through the Rural Maternity Initiative in 2008/09, Bairnsdale Health Service received $78,000 to review the delivery of future maternity services.
“In 2009/10, we will deliver a further $47,000 to support a project officer position within the health service to continue implementing the review findings.”
Mr Andrews said there are between 320 and 350 births each year at Bairnsdale Health Service.
The review recommends a new model of care for the hospital’s maternity services, improving choice for women and patient care and providing a better working environment for midwives.
“The Rural Maternity Initiative strengthens maternity services through workforce initiatives and enhances collaboration between health services,” Mr Andrews said.
“Health services are trying new models of midwifery care that improve the experience and choices for women having babies.”
Mr Andrews said the initiative highlights the importance to women of having maternity services closer to home.
“The Rural Maternity Initiative gives mums-to-be the reassurance that they can continue to give birth in their local community and have even better access to seamless care from pregnancy through childbirth and to post birth care,” he said.
Mr Andrews said the Victorian Government had provided a massive funding boost for Bairnsdale Health Service with its funding increased by 99.8 per cent since 1999.
“Bairnsdale Health Service’s base funding has increased from $18 million in 1999/2000 to $36 million in 2009/10,” he said.
“Our record investment will enable more patients to receive first-class health care, close to where they live.”
