Families in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will have access to even better healthcare with a $2.9 million boost for state-of-the-art medical technology and equipment at Eastern Health.

As part of the Victorian Government’s eastern suburbs Community Cabinet, the Premier John Brumby and Health Minister Daniel Andrews today visited Box Hill Hospital to announce funding for high-priority, high-cost medical equipment.

“We are giving Victorians a better health system, by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses,” Mr Brumby said.

“Last December I was proud to announce the $407.5 million redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital, which will give the hospital new emergency and surgery facilities and a dedicated precinct for children’s and women’s health services.

“Today’s funding is about giving the doctors, nurses and other dedicated health professionals at Box Hill and other Eastern Health campuses the very best equipment, so they can provide even better care to patients.”

Mr Brumby said Box Hill Hospital would receive $1.35 million as part of the allocation, building on the $407.5 million redevelopment which is the largest single suburban health infrastructure project in Victoria.

“It’s an important project for the eastern suburbs, one which will deliver more than 100 extra beds, enabling about 7000 additional patients to be treated at the hospital each year,” he said.

Other Eastern Health services will receive the following funding as part of the $2.9 million boost:

  • $664,600 for Angliss Hospital;
  • $63,400 for Healesville Hospital;
  • $810,674 for Maroondah Hospital; and
  • $7200 for the Peter James Centre.

Mr Andrews said part of Box Hill Hospital’s $1.35 million would fund 11 cutting-edge hospital beds for its intensive care unit.

“The new fully adjustable, ergonomic electric beds will enhance comfort and safety for patients and improves the working environment for clinical staff,” he said.

“The hospital will also be able to purchase a high-tech ultrasound unit for the operating theatre and liver clinic.

“Other new medical equipment to be funded at Box Hill includes cardiotocographs, epidural pumps and phototherapy units for its maternity services.

“Targeted equipment funding enables Victorian hospitals to stay at the forefront of new technology to ensure they continue to provide the best possible care to patients.”
