The 58th meeting of the ASEAN Committee of Science and Technology (COST) organised by Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research kicks off today in Singapore.
The three day meeting, which will end on 5th November 2009, will be attended by more than 100 delegates made up of policy makers, scientists and academics. This includes 11 senior officials from the 10 member countries of ASEAN.
The meeting will discuss issues relating to the progress of science and technology development in the region based on the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science and Technology (APAST) 2007-2011.
At today’s meeting, eight out of the nine subcommittees of COST which met on 1st – 2nd November 2009, will present their reports and updates on the following areas such as Biotechnology; Food Science and Technology; Marine Science and Technology; Materials Science and Technology; Microelectronics and Information Technology; Non-conventional Energy Research; Marine Science and Technology; Science and Technology Infrastructure and Resources Development and Space Technology and Applications.
During the meeting, COST members will also finalise their preparations for a report to be presented during the upcoming 13th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology (13th AMMST) to be held on 6th – 7th November 2009.
Mr Wong Kan Seng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs will be guest-of-honour at the opening ceremony of the 13th AMMST.
Said Professor Low Teck Seng, Deputy Managing Director (Research), A*STAR and the newly appointed Singapore National COST Chairman, “On behalf of Singapore and A*STAR, I would like to extend a warm welcome all the delegates for the upcoming 58th COST meeting.
One key agenda over the next few days would be to review and discuss the progress of the various initiatives stemming from the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science and Technology. Our activities will help to reinforce the role of science and technology in the region to bring about activities that can sustain economic growth and bring about community well being in the region.”
Professor Low had taken over the role from Professor Chong Tow Chong, Executive Director of A*STAR’s Science and Engineering Research Council, and Data Storage Institute, who served as Singapore’s National COST Chairman since 2004.
The 59th COST meeting will be held in Cambodia next year.
