The North West CDC and NEA have jointly launched a 10-year Eco Plan to strengthen efforts to galvanise and empower the community to take on greater environmental ownership.

Centred around five main pillars including energy efficiency and the 3Rs, the Eco Plan aims to cultivate a green culture amongst the community.

The North West CDC (NWCDC) and National Environment Agency (NEA) jointly launched the district-wide, 10-year Eco Plan today, in support of the National Sustainable Development Blueprint. Known as Green Living at North West, the plan aims to strengthen efforts to galvanise and empower the community to take on greater environmental ownership. This is in line with the theme of Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) 2010.

The Green Living at North West Eco Plan was launched by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive Officer of NEA together with Minister Lim Swee Say, Minister K Shanmugam and four other Advisers of North West District at the CGS @ North West! 2010 community event held at Republic Polytechnic.

Centred around five main pillars – personal, food and environmental hygiene, dengue prevention, energy efficiency, the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) and clean public toilets, the Eco Plan outlines a series of outreach programmes and specific objectives to cultivate a green culture amongst the community over the next 10 years.

In support of the five pillars, some ongoing programmes have already been rolled out to the constituencies. Besides these ongoing programmes, two new initiatives, Project Rusco @ North West and Recycle Starts @ Home will be launched in early 2010 while other programmes like the PC Goes Green @ North West, which had been launched in only one constituency, will be implemented in all other constituencies progressively over the next 10 years.

With the support of the Grassroots Organisations, Town Councils and the respective NGOs, NWCDC and NEA are targeting to increase the level of awareness of all 196,888 households in the North West district on environmental issues, and will work towards achieving 50% participation rate of households in any of the pillar programmes by 2019. An energy efficiency programme that has been rolled out by NWCDC aims to educate 50,000 households on energy conservation and achieve the goal of 10,000 households reducing energy consumption by 10%. NWCDC is also targeting to reach out to 4,000 households yearly via the on-going used cooking oil recycling programme, Project Grease-cyle @ North West and transform at least 500 banners into reusable bags every year in support of the 3Rs pillar.

“The Eco Plan for the next 10 years is a step forward for NWCDC and the community in the North West district to achieving our vision of a sustainable environment for future generations. It underscores the message that each of us can contribute to protecting the environment by making simple changes to our lifestyle. We look forward to the support and participation of the households whose effort will make a significant difference to the results we hope to achieve,” said Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive Officer of NEA

CGS @ North West! 2010 community event

This year, the CGS @ North West! 2010 community event adopted a community-centric approach. The event was jointly organised by NEA, NWCDC as well as Republic Polytechnic (RP). The idea for this collaboration was mooted to empower some 300 students from the School of Hospitality, Diploma in Integrated Events Management, to take on greater environmental ownership. The students developed ideas and organised interactive activities to promote Green Living to the public. “This is an excellent platform for our students to apply their classroom learning, while contributing to Green Living,” said a RP spokesperson.

Some key highlights of the event include, the Green Living exhibition, the CGS Environmental Ownership Awards Ceremony as well as the Green Vehicle Competition where participants will construct vehicles out of scrap reusable materials and compete for the winning title in a race in their innovatively constructed vehicles.
