More than £1.5million Welsh Assembly Government funding will be invested to expand the critical care provision at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Health Minister Edwina Hart has announced.

The funding will enable a phased increase of critical care beds from 14 to 18, along with associated equipment.

In January, the Health Minister asked the Health Board for proposals to improve facilities at the Royal Gwent Hospital while it continues to work on plans for the development of the Specialist and Critical Care Centre. Aneurin Bevan Health Board plans identify the Llanfrechfa Grange Hospital, Cwmbran, as the preferred site for the new centre and in July the Minister gave her approval to this selection.

Mrs Hart said:

“I am committed to the improvement and development of the health services within Gwent.

“The development of the Specialist and Critical Care Centre is part of the wider Clinical Futures programme – an ambitious plan that aims to radically change the way in which healthcare is delivered in the region and move away from a reliance on the Royal Gwent Hospital and Nevill Hall Hospital.

“The Health Board is working to assure me that the plans to develop primary and community services to support the new Centre are robust given the number of beds in the region that will be significantly reduced once it is opened. In the meantime, I want to ensure people have access to critical care in Gwent when needed and that’s why I am funding the expansion of the critical care unit.”

Chair of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board David Jenkins added:

“This is a significant investment for our critical care services. It means that the Royal Gwent Hospital will be extremely well placed to care for patients requiring the highest level of clinical intervention whilst additional work is carried out on the Clinical Futures programme.”
