February is Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History (LGBT) Month.
Hertfordshire libraries are celebrating the lives and achievements of the LGBT community with author / journalists Paul Burston and Joanna Briscoe, an archive event recalling memories of Quentin Crisp at St Albans Art School and book displays at some libraries across the county. An LGBT book and resource list is available at all libraries or online using the link on the right.
Paul Burston will be talking about his book The Gay Divorcee, a hugely entertaining tale of love, marriage and the lies that happen in between. Described by the Independent on Sunday as ‘Gay London’s Jane Austen …a fearless chronicler of modern gay life.’ Paul edits the Gay & Lesbian section of Time Out London and for 3 years running has been in the 101 most influential Gay People in Britain in the Independent’s annual Pink List. ‘Easily one of the leading gay commentators of his generation’ Attitude. An evening not to be missed.
Joanna Briscoe, author, literary critic for the Guardian, guest columnist for the Independent and Radio 4 broadcaster will talk about her book Sleep with Me. Dramatised over Christmas starring Adrian Lester, it is ’seductive, scary and almost frighteningly readable’ Julie Myerson. ‘This is a carefully orchestrated roman noir in which all sinners must take equal blame.’ The Guardian. Spend a hugely enjoyable evening with this ‘vivid and passionate writer’.
LGBT Memories
Quentin Crisp, famous for his memoir The Naked Civil Servant, worked as a life model at St Albans Art School. If you’ve got a memory to share about this English writer and raconteur or other memories, we would love to hear from you. This event is part of the Making Memories Heritage Lottery Funded project to create an interactive community archive website for Hertfordshire. Anybody can add their own memories, images and video clips of living and working in the county on any topic or event, whether it was last week or many years ago. They can also add comments about a memory contributed by somebody. If you’ve got a picture or memory you would like to share, archive staff will be on hand to listen to memories and show people how the site works.
