London Councils has welcomed the announcement today that three London boroughs will be given more influence over the way affordable housing is provided in their boroughs.

Westminster, Hackney and Croydon councils will be taking part in a pilot scheme allowing them to decide on local investment priorities, announced today by the Mayor of London and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The councils will work closely with the Mayor and the HCA to influence how affordable housing is delivered in their areas, where it is delivered and by whom.

While backing the pilot, London Councils remains keen to see all boroughs given full control over housing investment to ensure they can deliver more affordable housing for Londoners.

London Councils’ Executive Member for Housing, Councillor Steve Reed said:

“Boroughs are always best placed to understand the needs of their local communities so we welcome these first steps towards devolved housing investment decisions – and will be working closely with the Mayor and the HCA to take this forward.

“While we are pleased with this direction, we hope the HCA and the Mayor will be bold and take this a step further by letting boroughs control the housing investment purse strings to ensure that more affordable homes are built in London for Londoners”.
