Scotland’s 2009 Statistics For Public Sector Teacher And Pupils Report

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today published results of the annual pupil and teacher censuses.

These statistics provide the latest data on the number of pupils, teachers and schools in the publicly funded sector, the types and sizes of schools and classes, and other pupil and teacher characteristics.

Some of the main findings are:
Pupils in Scotland 2009

  • The number of pupils continues to fall (down 0.7 per cent since 2008).
  • The average primary class size was 23.1 pupils, down from 23.2 in 2008.
  • 13.2 per cent of P1-P3 pupils were in class sizes of 18 or less (unchanged from 2008).
  • There was a 14 per cent increase in the number of pupils with additional support needs (mainly due to a concerted effort to improve recording).
  • There were around 21,200 pupils identified as having English as an additional language.
  • There were 138 different languages spoken as the main home language, with Polish being second to English, followed by Punjabi and Urdu.
  • The total number of pupils receiving publicly funded school education is projected to decrease steadily from 677 thousand in 2009, to 662 thousand in 2015, then rising until peaking at 684 thousand in 2022.

Teachers in Scotland 2009

  • The total number of teachers based in pre-school, primary, secondary and special schools, or visiting specialists, was 52,993, which is 1,348 fewer than the revised 2008 figure of 54,341.
  • The pupil teacher ratio in schools increased from 12.9 in 2008 to 13.2 in 2009.
  • There were a further 22,144 school based staff and 3,257 centrally employed support staff identified in the staff census as providing support to the education system.
