As the nation tomorrow (Saturday) begins the 1,000 day countdown until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, North East England is highlighting the people and businesses right across the region who have already benefited from the Games.
One North East and Sport England North East are working with public and private sector partners to maximise the potential of the London 2012 Games by focusing on eight key themes; Business and Procurement, Tourism and Image, Skills and Volunteering, Health, Children and Young People, Culture, Pre-Games Training Camps and Performance Sport.
These themes incorporate London 2012 initiatives and regional projects to help create a lasting legacy from the Games. Here in North East England are our very own 1,000 reasons to celebrate:

Tanya Gray, London 2012 & Commonwealth Games Coordinator at One North East, said: “With 1,000 days to go until the beginning of the 2012 Games, it’s important to reflect on the great success that we have made and continue to make in the run up to 2012. In the past few months alone, two agreements have been signed with international Olympic committees.
“Hosting the Olympics is a once in a lifetime opportunity and a chance to showcase to the world our passion for sport here in the North East. By continuing to work closely with regional partners from across the sporting spectrum and in the public and private sectors, we can help create this lasting legacy.”
Judith Rasmussen, Regional Strategic Lead for Sport England North East, said: “As we move closer to the 2012 Games, we are continually looking at the opportunities they will provide the region and how we can inspire the next generation of participants and talented performers.
“Our vision is providing us with a great opportunity to showcase the excellent facilities, skills and support services.”
Paul Taylor, Project Director at Business Link said: “As London 2012 marks 1,000 days to go before the opening of the Games I urge all those businesses who want to benefit from the opportunities associated with the Games to get in touch with Business Link’s dedicated Olympic support service, Compete North East, to make sure they are best placed to tender for and win Olympic contracts.
“Business Link is doing everything possible to ensure North East businesses get all the support they need to challenge for Olympic success. For example, earlier this month North East businesses were introduced to Paul Deighton, and were given a unique insight into what they need to do to win Olympic contracts.”
London 2012 Chairman Sebastian Coe commented, “Reaching 1,000 days to go gives us an opportunity to celebrate. Thousands of people across the North East are already inspired by, benefiting from or delivering London 2012, from those who are winning business contracts and taking part in sport participation projects inspired by the Games to the millions of National Lottery players who are helping to fund the venue construction. Over the next one thousand days our teams will put their heart and soul into ensuring the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012 are a spectacular success and deliver a tangible legacy for future generations in the North East.”
